WAR & PEACE
A remembrance
Installation and Film work
by Julie Bradshaw and Ken Rowles
Nearly 20 years ago in his office at 54 London Road, Teynham local film director Ken Rowles was asked by war artist Leo Rawling to direct a film based on his book “And the Dawn came up like Thunder” featuring his words, photos and sketches. Ken took on the assignment and joined with actor Simon Ward in pre-production and started work on the film. At the time Leo was a very sick man and died before the film was commissioned. Sadly the project was shelved and never completed. Only a short promotion video was ever made and this is now being shown for the first time at the POLKA DOT ART CENTRE 54 London Road, Teynham along with many of Leo’s sketeches, photos and letters
Alongside Leo Rawlings work, local artist Julie Bradshaw is setting up an emotive installation piece in the Long Room based on wartime memorabilia, which she has collected over the years as part of her own work (dealing with memories), along with many other pieces, which have been kindly donated, for this project. The installation, which will be interactive - is to serve as a reminder of the emotional horrors and loneliness of the wars and how these artefacts affect us even now.
Colin's late father Roy Barnard was at the Battle of the River Plate on HMS Ajax and has a street named after him in the town of Ajax, Canada. Some of the items related to the battle will be on display.
As further support for this Remembrance project the ladies of the Teynham WI group will be exhibiting for the first time their completed works “Poppy Days”
